Spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba’s condition is stable, though he continues to be on a ventilator, doctors attending on him said Wednesday.

The doctors said at a news conference here Wednesday evening that the 85-year-old godman was suffering from multi-organ dysfunction but was responding to treatment. He was still on CRRT (continuous renal replacement therapy) to help his respiratory and kidney functions.

As his treatment at the Sathya Sai Super Speciality Hospital in this tiny pilgrim town of Anantapur district entered its 10th day, the doctors, for the first time, came before the media with all the details of his condition.

While claiming that Sai Baba was stable, hospital director A.N. Safaya said it was not possible to say how long he will have to stay in the intensive care unit (ICU).

"We are doing all tests on him, providing the best available treatment and keeping a close watch on his health round-the-clock. We are doing whatever is humanly possible," Safaya said.

Another physician, Ravi Raj, said while the spiritual leader’s heartbeat and blood pressure were normal, the infection in his lungs and the accumulation of water in the body due to dysfunctioning kidneys remained a concern.

"We are continuing CRRT to help his kidney function," the doctor said.

The godman was admitted to the hospital March 28 with pneumonia and breathing problems. The doctors said the pacemaker helped regulate the heartbeat.

As millions of Sai Baba’s devotees are anxious and some of them are demanding that they be allowed to see him or at least make provisions for his video be released, the doctors said nobody other than doctors can be allowed inside the ICU as this might aggravate his infection.

Safaya said taking pictures or videos inside the ICU would be a violation of human rights.

Andhra Pradesh Health Secretary P.V. Ramesh said they were providing the best available treatment to Sai Baba by seeking the services of top experts from Bangalore and Hyderabad.

The doctors Monday had termed his condition as critical, triggering anxiety among his devotees.
