Mandya: Greed gaining upper hand - martyred soldier’s family fights for money
Mandya, Feb 27: A huge inflow of financial assistance into the family of H Guru, who was martyred in Pulwama terrorist attack recently, has reportedly given rise to differences between the family members. The family has been the recipient of generous donations from the people who have filled the family coffers with over Rs 15 crore so far. But this money has been causing heartburn within the family.
After the bank account details of Guru’s wife, Kalavathi, were shared through social websites, people have contributed to the possible extent to her account. Contributions have come in small as well as large quantities. A person having running business abroad has contributed one crore rupees. State government and Reliance company have donated Rs 25 lac each. Infosys Foundation has given ten lac rupees while National Travels too has given Rs 10 lac. Alva’s Education Foundation has paid Rs 10 lac to the family. Sumalatha Ambareesh has announced her decision to donate 20 guntas of land to the family.
But, the money, it is said, has given rise to greed, and relationship between the family members has soured. Friction has broken out between Guru’s wife, Kalavathi on one side, and her in-laws, and brothers of her husband on the other. People living in Gudikere Colony where the family lives, say that they could heard loud voices till late into the night from the family house. After fighting among themselves, the family members even approached the police station, but the police who refused to register the case, told them that their fights will convey a wrong message to the society which extended help to them out of patriotism.
The police, it is said, have advised the family members to wait till the conclusion of post-funeral rituals including the 13th day ceremony. The police have asked the family to revert to them after these things are over.
It is said that Guru’s mother, Chikkahollamma, brought pressure on Kalavathi to marry her younger son, Madhu, so that the money now flown in remains within the family. But Kalavathi refused to accept this proposal. Guru’s family is unable to digest the fact that the relatives from the side of Kalavathi’s parents are eagerly waiting to take her back to parental home once the rituals are complete.
The pregnancy issue too has also made public the differences within the family. While Guru’s mother said that her daughter-in-law was four-month pregnant, Kalavathi dismissed the information as wrong. The doctor then intervened and clarified that Kalavathi was not pregnant.
