More than 2,000 people, including students, attend I-Day celebrations at Alva’s

Major General A. Arun, Deputy Commandant and Chief Instructor, Officers’ Training Academy, Chennai, said on Thursday that one can contribute to the nation’s development in one’s own field and does not need to do so by joining the armed forces.

He was speaking after unfurling the national flag at Alva’s Educational Institutions in Moodbidri near here. The festival of freedom, Maj Gen Arun said, should be celebrated after understanding one’s responsibility in society. One can contribute to the nation as a good teacher, doctor, preacher and in many other roles, he said.

On the occasion, State commerce topper in PU Olvita D’Souza and SSLC State topper Sujnan R. Shetty, both from Alva’s, were felicitated with a purse of ₹2 lakh each. Foundation president M. Mohan Alva, former MLAs K. Abhayachandra Jain and K. Amarnath Shetty, and others were present at the celebrations, attended by over 2,000 spectators, including students.
The foundation, on this occasion, celebrated the 101st birthday of Mijarguthu Anand Alva, father of Mohan Alva. The Alva family performed the padapuja of senior Alva and lit 101 lamps to mark the occasion.

Nitte (Deemed-to-be University) Chancellor N. Vinay Hegde delivered the felicitation address while singers Rameshchandra and Malini Keshav Prasad performed. MLA for Moodbidri Umanath Kotian and others were also present.
