 Kiosks manned by differently-abled salespersons and delivery boys set up at 3 stations

Carry bags made by inmates of Tihar jail are now available at select stations of Mumbai Metro 1, connecting Versova to Ghatkopar.

Part of a bid to promote the government’s Swachh Bharat Mission, the city’s only operational Metro line has opened kiosks selling bags made from recycled polyethylene terephthalate

The Mumbai Metro One Pvt. Ltd. (MMOPL) has tied up with Bag Forever, a green start-up, to sell bags at Andheri, Ghatkopar, and Marol Naka stations.

The kiosks named as Cart With Heart (CWH), which are manned by differently-abled salespersons and delivery boys, also sell pencils made from recycled newspapers by women self-help groups from rural areas.

“Mumbai Metro One is an environment-friendly mass rapid transit system, which is fully devoted to its green promise and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. We are pleased to partner with Bag Forever to achieve their social objective and support such a unique sustainability measure. We take this opportunity to urge commuters to stop the use of one-time plastic,” an MMOPL spokesperson said.

Amit Arondekar, co-founder of CWH, said, “We are not here to gain sympathy. We want to make every commuter bag-ready by these environment-friendly bags. The MMOPL has helped us by not only providing the space for our kiosks, but also by understanding the concept and supporting it.”

The company, in the next five years, aims to create 1,000 jobs for differently-abled people.
