Samiti gives call for Kota bandh against compulsory FASTag rule of MoRTH

Print UDUPI: Heddari Jagruti Samiti has given a call for bandh in Kota zilla panchayat constituency area on February 22 to protest the decision of union ministry of road transport and highways to make FASTag compulsory for vehicles from February.
A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of all stakeholders at Shivakrupa Kalyana Mantap at Sasthan with the Samiti demanding that toll concession given to locals be continued as before. All shops and commercial establishments will down shutters in Kota ZP constituency limits on the day and people of the area will collect in large numbers at the Sasthan toll plaza maintained by the concessionaire Navayuga Udupi Tollway Private Ltd and hold a huge protest.
The protest is also to exert pressure on the district administration to permit the locals residing in the vicinity of the toll plaza to use the plaza for free.
Acceding to a request from Kiran Gorayya, Brahmawar tahsildar that he needed a day’s time to take a suitable decision with regard to their request, the Samiti rescinded on their decision to block the toll plaza and instead took out a silent procession.
A large posse of policemen posted at the toll plaza prevented the Samiti members from marching to the plaza. The tahsildar heard the plea of the protesters patiently and assured to address them.
He also requested Shivaprasad Rai, manager of the toll plazas that NUTPL operates to allow the concession given to local motorists until such time that the DISHA committee headed by Udupi-Chikkamagaluru Member of Parliament Shobha Karandlaje meets on February 21 and take a decision on their demands. Rai agreed to the same. Similar protest was also held at Hejamadi toll plaza under the leadership of former minister Vinay Kumar Sorake.
