BENGALURU: The state’s Covid technical advisory committee (TAC) on Sunday suggested the government ramp up testing and vaccinations across the state. Experts on the committee predicted new infections in the state will peak by the first week of May.

Health minister K Sudhakar later told reporters, “Experts opined the second wave will slowdown by the end of May. We must take measures to curb the spread.”

A source who is part of TAC said the committee stressed on the importance of testing and sought measures to prevent movement of people during festivals, including Ugadi, which has the potential to spread infections to small towns and villages. Although nothing about a lockdown was discussed, the TAC has asked the government to consider extending night curfew to beyond April 20.

Sudhakar said there were several suggestions from TAC. “I have asked them to draw up a report which will be submitted to chief minister BS Yediyurappa for further action,” he said.

Asked whether there would be another lockdown situation, Sudhakar said they do not want economic activities to be impacted and measures will be taken to prevent crowding.

He said, “If there is a huge surge in cases, our health infrastructure will be overburdened. TAC experts have suggested greater vigilance on borders and thorough testing of travellers arriving in Karnataka from states with high caseloads. TAC has been directed to write up a report which will be submitted to the CM. Further measures will be taken after a discussion with the CM.”

He went on to add: “Private hospitals have extended their support to the government. We were among the first in the country to start tele-ICU and private hospitals have also utilised it. We need to further strengthen this system. Suggestions which impact economic activities will not be considered. However, experts have suggested that we must curb large gatherings and crowds which have the potential to spread infection.”
