Bengaluru: Big surge in Covid cases across many districts

BENGALURU: Even as the pandemic second wave rages in Bengaluru city, the districts, which had been relatively unaffected, have now started reporting a large number of cases. There’s been a four-fold jump — from 2,571 cases on April 10 to 10,551 on April 22. Districts have collectively reported over 70,000 cases in just 10 days.

The number could go up as a large number of people from Bengaluru, fearing another lockdown, have gone to their home towns in the past few days. The signs are already emerging with a few districts reporting close to 1,000 cases daily.

On Thursday, Tumakuru reported 1,231 cases, the first district to report more than 1,000 cases a day. It’s followed by Ballari and Mysuru districts, with 940 and 818 cases respectively. Kalaburagi has been reporting over 650 cases a day since Tuesday.

The rising number is a cause of worry given the poor health infrastructure in rural areas. Reports of deaths due to non-availability of beds and the struggle of patients to get oxygen are flowing in.

“The public health system outside Bengaluru is not so good. If the number of cases starts rising, it’ll be devastating. The government must take measures to increase the number of ICU beds, ventilators and ensure sufficient quantity oxygen in all government hospitals across the state immediately,” said Dr MC Sindhur, a physician in Hubballi. He said the government should have enforced curbs a month ago when the second wave swept through Maharashtra.

A cardiologist from Belagavi warned that the government needs to act on a war-footing. “The government is gasping to handle the situation in a city like Bengaluru which has world-class health facilities. Imagine what will happen if the number of cases from districts doubles in the next few days,” he said.

According to the health department, there are over 10,000 beds in both government and private hospitals outside Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Thursday instructed district ministers to review the situation in their districts every day and ensure beds, ventilators and oxygen supply. The government also set up district-level committees following a Supreme Court directive for effective Covid management.
