CRPF’s canine training school opening event turns flop show First day, first show, flop show. This sums up the sequence of events at the inauguration of the dog training school, by Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on the CRPF campus at Taralu village on Kanakapura Road on Monday. |

 Bangaloreans, who travelled all the way to the campus, and Chidambaram, the chief guest - who flew on a chartered flight all the way from Delhi - were let down badly. Soon after the formal ribbon cutting ceremony, the guest was taken to a demonstration area where the trained dogs and cops (pet handlers) displayed a few skills. The union minister caught the organisers on the wrong foot soon after the first event, where a trained dog tied with a remote controlled camera and handler, scouting for suspected terrorists, was over. After the event, the two cops, along with the pet, approached the dais for a formal salute. Chidambaram requested them to explain the technology involved and also asked for the camera. As luck would have it, the camera had failed to capture what they had explained. In fact, the minister tried his best to look at the footage by turning the camera in all directions. Once he was convinced that the camera was of poor quality, he told them to update the technology. Masood Ahmed - the man in charge of the training and DG, CRPF - chipped in and tried to save the day. Masood said: “The training schedule is for 60 weeks. We are still in the preliminary stage. We will try and get hi-tech cameras that will serve the purpose.” Chidambaram was in no mood to face the media. When a few mediapersons requested him to take a few questions, he quickly got into his car and scribbled a message in the visitor’s book, after raising the windows of his vehicle. Currently, CRPF is using its 253-acre campus for the dog breeding and training school. The project demand is for around 3,000 dogs. But, as of now they have only 38 dogs. The Belgian Shepherd, popularly known as Malinois, is the much sought-after breed. An officer said: “We have chosen these breeds as they are known for their extraordinary abilities at sniffing, tracking, speed, high level of endurance and aggression.” |
