Print | New Delhi, Dec 16, DHNS:Parliament will have an extended winter session for facilitating the passage of the contentious Lokpal bill. Informed sources told Deccan Herald here on Friday that the session would be extended by three or four days for considering and passing the bill whose birth has been mired in a bitter battle between the government and the civil society. | |
| The session was to originally conclude on December 22 but would be extended to facilitate the passage of the bill. The Union Cabinet will consider the bill on December 19, and will introduce it in Parliament the next day. The Cabinet was to earlier meet on Sunday, soon after the return of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from Moscow the previous night. The government is hopeful that Anna Hazare would not carry out his threat of beginning an indefinite fast from December 27 if the session was extended. Team Anna member Kiran Bedi has hinted that they were willing to wait and the fast would be deferred if the session was extended to pass the Bill. However, Team Anna core committee members Arvind Gaur said: “We are keeping a watch, and will decide about it at the core committee meeting.” According to sources, the government may adopt an important recommendation of the parliamentary standing committee to provide 50 percent reservation for SC/ST, backward castes, minorities and women in the Lokpal and its search committee. This was a key demand of former ministers Ram Vilas Paswan and Lalu Prasad during the all-party meet convened by the prime minister on December 21. Manmohan Singh has constituted a four member informal committee of ministers — Home Minister P Chidambaram, Law Minister Salman Khurshid and Minister of State for Personnel V Narayanasamy — under the overall charge of Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee. The panel has an onerous task of formalising the government’s stand on several controversial issues of Lokpal - which pertain to inclusion of the prime minister, an “appropriate mechanism” to include group C employees, and bringing CBI under Lokpal and the Citizens’ Charter. Narayanasamy on Friday cautioned the anti-corruption activist from Ralegan Siddi: “Hazare should have patience. He has given his point of view. It is not the only view. It is for the government to consider all the views.” “The government and the prime minister are committed to bring the Lokpal Bill,” he added. |
