At least 15,000 Bangladeshis come in the UAE to find work every month
Abu Dhabi: Bangladeshis are finding the largest number of new overseas jobs in the UAE, according to the country’s ambassador.

"About 15,000 Bangladeshis are coming to the UAE every month for employment," Mohammad Nazmul Quanine told Gulf News on the occasion of Victory Day of Bangladesh.

Although Saudi Arabia hosts the largest number of Bangladeshi expatriates — about two million — there has not been much new recruitment there in the past three years due to local restrictions, Quanine said.

At more than 700,000-strong, Bangladeshis constitute the third largest expatriate community in the UAE.

Good relationship

The number of new jobs on offer shows the good relationship between the two countries, Quanine said.

Bangladeshis in the capital celebrated Victory Day on Friday with a colourful programme of events at their embassy.

Every December 16 Bangladesh marks the anniversary of the country’s independence from Pakistan after a nine-month war in 1971.

The ambassador hoisted the national flag in the presence of 200 community members and pupils from the Shaikh Khalifa Bangladeshi Islamic School in Abu Dhabi.

They prayed for the martyrs in the war and prosperity for the country.

Judicial process

Quanine said the recently started judicial process against the perpetrators of war crimes during the freedom struggle is proof that the country still cherishes those who sacrificed their lives.

No action was taken against those guilty of war crimes, which included killing intellectuals working for freedom, in 1971.

As a result, the present government set up the War Crimes Tribunal to bring them to account for their actions.

Cultural programme

The Bangladeshi community organised a cultural programme to jointly celebrate Victory Day and the 40th UAE National Day on December 1.

A cultural troupe from Bangladesh, sponsored by the UAE government, performed at the event.
