Begging mafia: City cops nab 4 in Gadag

Print The city police made a major breakthrough by nabbing four people in Gadag, in north Karnataka, in connection with child trafficking, including the kidnap of Ashwini (Girl reunited with parents after three years, Bangalore Mirror, Dec 20).
The gang comprised four women and two men, while two managed to escape. They kidnapped children and sold them in neighbouring states. The arrested are: Vanishri, Kumaramma, Yallavva and Sukhdev. Raja and Gangavva, the couple, escaped.
Sukhdev is a habitual offender and rowdy-sheeter who has been in the business of making spurious liquor for the last 45 years. He has gone to jail for more than 10 times.
After BM published the story on Ashwini, the police obtained information from Child Welfare Committee and traced the gang to Betageri village near Gadag.
Preliminary investigations revealed Vanishri operated near temples and bus stands in the city. After spotting a child, she would try to divert its attention from parents,
pamper the child and take it to her village.
On reaching the village, she would force the child to beg or sell it. Sukhdev was a mediator in this business. Kumaramma and Yellavva were Vanishri’s accomplices. Yellavva was Sukhdev’s wife.
The police believe the gang has links with its counterparts in Maharashtra, Goa and Andhra Pradesh. It is learnt Raja and Gangavva visited Maharashtra every month in connection with their dubious business. The police believe they would have run away to that state.
