The varsity, which has secured 78th rank, is one of the three Indian institutions figuring in the list of top 178 universities

Manipal University is ranked second in India and 78th in the UI Green Metric Ranking of World Universities 2011. Prof Riri Fitri Sari, the chairperson, UI Green Metric Ranking of World University, conveyed this information to the university.

Only three Indian universities figure in the list of top 178. IIT Madras is at the 44th position, followed by Manipal University (78) and IIT Bombay (107). The detailed rankings are available at greenmetric@ui.ac.id.
 
The ranking is proof of the varsity’s eco-consciousness and its translation into reality by undertaking efforts towards sustainable development. The ranking is based on the principle that measuring sustainability should involve three things: Environment, Economics and Equity (3 Es).
 
It is expected that by drawing the attention of university leaders and stake holders, more attention will be given to combating global climate change, energy and water conservation, waste recycling and green transportation.
 
Manipal University campus, sprawling over 500 acres, and built on a laterite rock, houses some 15,000 people. Over the years, the entire place has been transformed into a green campus. This transformation was made possible by adopting various innovative and scientific methods in the areas of solid waste management, rainwater harvesting, making vermi-compost, energy conservation and waste water recycling, to name a few.
 
The Manipal Group has constantly tried to make Manipal University a sustainable eco-campus. While the varsity is a ‘no smoking’ campus, rain water harvesting, recycling of water, state-of-the-art waste disposal systems, energy-saving devices and use of solar energy are a few innovative methods that have made the campus eco-friendly.
 
Manipal University is a recipient of ISO 14001:2004 certification, a standard developed by International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO). It means the organisation has minimised harmful effects on the environment caused by its activities and continually improved its environmental performance.
