For, in this season of “eternal hope and celebration” her six-year-old son Joshua was not allowed to carry his balloon in the train to their home, while another commuter was allowed to carry a beer bottle.
On hearing the complaint, Deccan Herald did a reality check to find out if one could carry alcohol on the Metro car. Yes. A reporter carrying a bag containing beer bottles travelled on the Metro, passing through the baggage scanners with no hassles.
Metro stations on Sunday saw more crowd than they did on New Years’ Eve but were short-staffed as the extra personnel who worked on Saturday opted to take off.
An official from Customer Care at MG Road station told Deccan Herald that the rush on New Year’s Eve was much less than expected, but the first day of 2012 saw people in long queues, patiently waiting for a ride. The station officials had their hands full, trying to prevent people who tried to get into the station through the non-entry area.
Also, those who were new to the luggage scanning machines had to be goaded into gettign their bags scanned.
A security woman who was operating the scanning machines, was so busy that she did not bother to look at the computer screens displaying the contents of the bags that were screened, for any objectionable material that the commuters may be carrying. Such neglect could prove costly.
B L Y Chavan, BMRCL spokesperson who earlier termed the security as being “on a par with those installed at BIAL” needs to conduct a reality check. While the beer bottle was only an experiment to check the security measures, it became clear that even inflammable liquids could be taken on board the Metro with much ease.
