Woman Survives after falling 14 feet from metro station
NEW DELHI: She skirted death by a whisker - a hop, skip and perilous plunge from a Metro track on the Dilshad Garden-Rithala Red line. And it’s a miracle that the 20-year-old survived after hurtling down 14 feet and falling bang on the bonnet off a jeep, which had braked at a traffic light.
Earlier, the woman was standing at the Kanhaiya Nagar Metro station when she suddenly fell on the tracks just as a train was entering. She rolled over to the other track in a desperate bid to save herself only to find a train zooming in on the other track too.
Time was running out. Within seconds she could be run over. The shocked woman tried to climb onto the platform, but couldn’t. She then did the unthinkable. The woman jumped from the tracks to the road below. But she lived to tell her miracle tale.
She landing on the bonnet of a jeep that got stuck at a traffic intersection, suffering serious head injuries. She was rushed to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital, where she is under observation. Doctors say the girl may survive.
The incident took place around 1.57pm. Metro Railway police said the woman was waiting at platform 1 and was scheduled to board the Rithala-bound train. "CCTV footage shows she had bought a ticket for Keshavpuram. She strayed towards the edge to feel the sunlight streaming in. She was suddenly dazed by the glare and fell on the tracks even as the train was entering. She rolled over to the other track in the nick of time. But when she got up, she immediately realized that another train was hurlting towards her from the opposite end too,’’ said a Rithala Metro police station officer.
The woman’s next step was shocking. She jumped off the station. "In her statement to the police, the woman said she tried climbing onto the platform, but failed. She then flung herself between the gap between the railing and the platform. She fell on a jeep’s bonnet 14 feet below,’’ the officer said.
DMRC officials said, "We have little role in the incident and Metro services were not hit." Delhi police though said it did not think it was a suicide attempt. "The girl’s statements and action do suggest it was an accident. We are in touch with CISF and DMRC and if we feel that it was a suicide case, we will lodge an FIR against her," said an investigating officer.
Earlier, on January 24, a 26-year-old man narrowly escaped death after he allegedly jumped in front of a Metro train at the Chandni Chowk Metro station. Emergency brakes were applied immediately after the man, identified as Parash Lal, was seen falling in front of the train heading towards HUDA City Centre. However, he still got caught in the under-frame of the train and suffered serious injuries. Lal was rushed to the Asaf Ali Hospital in a state of unconsciousness and was reportedly admitted to the trauma centre. He is stable now.
Cops said they did not think it was a suicide attempt. "Her statements and action do suggest it was an accident"
