The Mangalore University will open its Centre for Applied Radioisotope and Radiation Technology (CARRT), a state-of-the-art research centre, next month. Radiation and isotopic technologies are a form of nuclear technology used to reduce harmful industrial emissions, reprocess waste streams, sterilise medical products as well as treat waste water. Radioisotopes, which are generally produced in research reactors or cylotrons, make important contributions in several sectors, including medicine, food processing, industry, agriculture, structural safety and research.
Mangalore University vice-chancellor T C Shivashankara Murthy said the centre will be inaugurated in the third week of February.
The CARRT is the only centre in south India catering to research in the field of applied radioisotope and radiation technology. It will also provide technical support to research scholars.
The centre has been set up at a cost of Rs 3 crore. The latest equipment have been installed at the centre which will help research scholars innovate in the branch of science which is directly connected to industry, environment and medical science.
The centre has been designed as per the standards stipulated by the Board of Radiation and Isotope Technology (BRIT), a unit of the Department of Atomic Energy, government of India.
Separate laboratories have been set up for radio-immuno assay, hybridoma, radio iodination, cell culture and other research activities. A fluorescent microscope with a capacity to magnify objects 4,000 times and other sophisticated equipment have been installed at the centre.
The board of research in the Department of Atomic Energy has sanctioned four research projects for the centre.
