Print Intrepid teenager gets senior police officer to apologise in public for the act
Young men like him could breathe new life into the likes of Anna Hazare’s movement. A first-year arts student at University College in Mangalore, he took a senior police officer to task for smoking in public and came away the winner in the incident.
Speaking to Bangalore Mirror, 19-year-old Manthesh Nagappa Mallikarjunapura said, “As a student-member of the DSS, I was to attend the SC/ST grievances meeting at the Mangalore police commissioner’s office on Sunday. I spotted the ACP smoking at the cash counter of the nearby Hotel Swagath, despite the prominently displayed ‘No Smoking’ board. I went up to him and said, ‘As a public servant, how can you break the law?’ The ACP tried to make out it was not such a big deal. When I reminded him that what he had done was wrong, he abused me and shot back with ‘who are you, get lost’, after which he threw away the cigarette and got into his car.”
“At the public meeting with DCP (crime) Dharmiah, I mentioned the incident and the DCP asked me to identify the cop. In fact, the officer, ACP (traffic) G V Subrahmanya, was sitting next to the DCP and said, ‘I did not scold the boy and threw away the cigarette immediately’,” Manthesh said.
Dharmiah and the others present at the meeting lauded Manthesh’s civic consciousness. The DCP gave the boy his telephone number in case he faced a ‘problem’, and the ACP too came to him and apologised.
Manthesh’s parents are casual labourers and he hails from Shirahatti taluk of Gadag district. His aim is to become a professor of political science and work for dalit welfare. Manthesh will be part of a delegation that plans to meet the chief minister and request him for more budgetary funds for dalit welfare schemes.
When I told him what he had done was wrong, he shot back: ‘Who are you? Get lost!’
