Military Secretary sends notice to Gen. Singh on his retirement on May 31
The government on Tuesday asked Chief of the Army Staff General V.K. Singh to cancel his visit to Israel mid-March, citing situation in West Asia.
Minister of State for Defence M.M. Pallam Raju said the decision was taken as Syria was “restless and other things are happening in the region … primarily because of what is happening in Syria, which is experiencing little turbulence. So I guess it is better ….”
The decision comes close on the heels of the Military Secretary sending a notice to Gen. Singh on his retirement on May 31, 2012 on reaching superannuation.
The serving of notice is normal for, the government starts preparatory work several months before the service tenure of officials is scheduled to end.
In the case of Gen. Singh, the government waited for the case in the Supreme Court. The court disposed of the case on February 17.
The government is likely to announce the next Army Chief latest by April 1, since it follows the norm of appointing a successor of a Service Chief at least 60 days in advance.
The interim period allows the successor time to set up his staff and office for a smooth transition.
However, the cancellation of the Israel visit can be seen as the government’s reluctance to allow an outgoing four-star general to visit a country with which it has growing defence engagement.
Israel is one of the leading countries that supply military hardware to India and conservative estimates suggest that the approximate total value of the weapons trade in the last 10 years stands around $10 billion.
In November 2009, the then Chief of the Army Staff, Gen. Deepak Kapoor, visited Israel and his Israeli counterpart Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, reciprocated with a visit to India a month later.
