Student held for alleged Naxal links

Print Based on a complaint by the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF), the Dakshina Kannada police arrested a first-year journalism student of Mangalore University Vittal and his father Lingappa Malekudiya for alleged Naxal links.
Vittal (in pic) is the first in his village to pursue a post-graduation course. His parents and a brother are agriculturists. His sister is pursuing a nursing course at Belthan-gady. The family lives in Kuthlur village of Belthangady taluk. From the bus stand, one has to walk for about two-and-a-half hours amidst dense forest to reach their house. A classmate said, “Unlike us, for any assignment he would speak directly to journalists and seek guidance. He volunteered for several public programmes.”
According to a friend, “Last Friday, he was the first to inform journalists about combing operations in his village. On the same day, he learnt that police were in his house and claimed that they had beaten his father. The moment he reached home, the police took him for questioning.”
Dr Waheeda Sultana, chairperson, Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Mangalore University expressed surprise over his arrest. “Vittal was a quiet boy and very punctual. We never saw any sign of Naxal connections,” she said.
Assistant superintendent of police (Puttur sub-division) M N Anucheth said, “The accused have been booked under sections 10 and 13 (2) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.” A police source said, “Extra rations, binoculars, paper cuttings and some other documents were seized. An FIR has been filed against his brother too.”
