Trivedi to present Rail Budget today

Print Amidst speculation of a hike in passenger fare and large scale privatisation, Union Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Dinesh Trivedi will present his maiden Rail Budget for 2012-13 in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
In a somewhat low-key appearance before the media, Trivedi on Tuesday denied any peek into his budget proposals but assured mediapersons of enough material to write about.
While sharing a few lighter moments with journalists, the railway minister said the rail budget would be “for the journalists, of the journalists and by the journalists”.
In fact, the main challenge before the minister is to balance the political concerns of Trinamool head and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her home state and the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and the railways’ dwindling revenue reserve.
Indian railways is facing a grim financial situation. The Planning Commission has been insisting on measures aimed at increasing its financial strength.
Trivedi had, earlier, appointed two high-level committees to suggest safety and modernization measures. Both the Committees have suggested hike in passenger fare and large scale privatisation.
The minister has been advocating “rationalization” of passenger fares. He has also been talking of freedom from political freedom.
As Trivedi presents the Railway Budget on Wednesday, it will show whether his ideas are accommodated or Mamata Banerjee’s political considerations prevail. Sources in the ministry, however, says that the Trinmool supremo’s political considerations are likely to outweigh all other considerations.
