Mumbai:Vile Parle MLA Krishna Hegde in the question hour today raised the issue of the need to have additional permits for Auto Rickshaw’s and Taxi’s in Mumbai.“The population of Mumbai has increased to 1.40 crores but public transport like Auto Rickshaws and Taxis are still less considering the growing population of the Metropolis” said Hegde.
“Issuing of new permits were stopped almost a decade ago, then the population of Mumbai was close to 80 lakhs. Today the population has almost doubled. Growing population means more commuters and to satisfy the needs of commuters we require more Auto Rickshaws and Taxis” Hegde added.Today Mumbai has 60,000 Taxi permits out of which 18,000 are cancelled and 1,21,000 Auto Rickshaw permits out of which 28,000 are cancelled for various reasons. Add to this is the entry of new Air Conditioned Fleet Taxi’s belonging to private companies.
Hegde asked the Government whether new permits will be issued to cater the growing need of Mumbaikars. Replying to Hegde, Minister of State for Transport Shri Gulabrao Deokar clarified that 28,000 Auto Rickshaw and 18,000 Taxi permits have been cancelled. Out of which 4000 permits are being given to fleet Taxis run by Private Companies already.
Also a policy regarding the issue of permits for 14,000 Taxi and 28,000 Auto Rickshaw will be finalized within 3 months. A total of 42,000 Taxi and Auto Rickshaw permits will be made available shortly. This will help in passenger commute.
