Mangalore gave ‘khaki’ to the world

Print Be it the Mangalore Tiles or the first newspaper in the state Mangalooru Samachara, the Basel Mission has contributed enormously to the development of the coastal belt. Interestingly, the origin of ‘khaki’ colour can also be attributed to the Basel Mission.
From the records available in the Basel Mission at Balmatta, it can be ascertained that in 1851 a master weaver, John Haller, was sent out to exploit the opportunities that beckoned. After 19 months, he already had more than 20 looms at which 27 workers, including six apprentices, were employed. By 1856, their skill had progressed and they won the second prize at an industrial fair in Madras. Haller experimented with the sap of the bark of the semecarpus tree and gave his new colour the Kannada name ‘khaki’, which means ‘dusty’, because it looks like the ubiquitous brownish yellow dust of the Indian road. It was an instant success.
The police chief of Mangalore was so happy that he clothed his entire force in this colour. On a visit to the Basel Mission weaving establishment at Balmatta, Lord Roberts, then commander-in-chief of British forces, was so impressed that he recommended its introduction into the British army.
Some contest this claim. They believe that khaki was used for uniforms by the Guide Corps under Lumsden and Hodson in 1848 and by the troops in the mutiny of 1857. John Haller reached India only in 1851; apparently, there were many khaki dyes in India by 1890. It is thus believed that the Basel Mission industries may have been the means by which the British commanders were stimulated to make wide use of khaki.
Dr Ratnakar Sadanand, director, The Karnataka Theological Research Institute, told Bangalore Mirror, “The weaving hall is still there, but has been converted into the Institute of Printing Technology.
“The architecture is such that it allows sun rays from all directions to provide clarity in colour. The windows are also large. Indigenous resources were used for the purpose. It was because of khaki that weaving got a commercial angle.”
