M’lore airport to acquire bldg that poses security threat
A 10-year-old proposal to acquire a building located 28 metres from the taxiway marking of Mangalore airport has finally been approved by the government.
The deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district had written to the state government seeking the release of Rs 3.09 crore for acquiring 3.21 acres of land, a part of the Deccan Park building situated near the airport. It was considered a security threat. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security had conducted a survey of the area.
Site inspection was conducted and the airport director was informed that the issue could be examined by the government if a proposal is received from the chairman, Airports Authority of India (AAI), New Delhi.
The AAI executive director said the Deccan Park area was posing operational difficulties and security risk due to its proximity to the airport boundary wall and sent a proposal for land acquisition by the government.
After examining the proposal in detail, the government, in its order dated March 28, approved the release of Rs 309 lakh to the DC for acquiring the land.
Speaking to Bangalore Mirror, airport director M R Vasudeva said, “The building has been posing a security threat. There is a possibility that miscreants can throw a stone at the aircraft from the building.”
