Banashankari goddess gets 400 sarees a week

Print It is raining sarees at the famous Banashankari temple: The goddess receives about 350-400 sarees from devotees every week as offering, making it the number one temple in Bangalore in terms of saree collection.
In the last 22 years, 16,000 sarees have been offered to the goddess. The temple auctions them every Friday and the amount collected is used for temple development and maintenance.
Many housewives participate in the auction as they are sold at less than half their market price.
Bangalore Mirror visited the temple on Friday and was witness to quality sarees being sold for as low as Rs 100. Kalpana, a housewife who had come from Uttarahalli, said: “I came here to pick up sarees as I get them at half the original price. It is much cheaper here and the number of people participating in the auction is increasing in recent times.”
Located on Kanakapura Road, Banashankari temple dates back to 1915 when ardent devotee Somanna Shetty got the idol installed. Currently, the temple is under the control of the muzrai department of the state government. One of the most popular temples in the city, it draws over 10,000 devotees on Fridays, 7,000 on Tuesdays and 5,000 on Sundays.
The sarees are offered by devotees whose prayers have been answered. The costliest saree offered to the goddess was worth Rs 13,000, said a temple executive.
Auctioning of sarees has become a regular Friday event since 1989.
It happens between 12 noon and 5 pm.
The temple gets all types of sarees — cotton, silk, polyster, nylex and art silk. “During Navratri, Banashankari janmothsava and Brahmarathothsava, we get more sarees as offerings,” said the official.
