The leakage of question papers in March does not seem to have affected the students as a record-high 57.03 per cent of them passed the II PUC examination, the results of that were declared on Wednesday.

Deepa M, a student of MES Kishore Kendra PU College, Malleswaram, is the topper. She scored 98.83 per cent or 593 marks out of 600.

The pass percentage is a healthy 69.59 among regular students, whereas only 25.01 per cent external candidates could get ahead. The percentage of successful students increased by 8.1 compared with the 2011 mark. It is only the fourth time since 2003 that the number of successful examinees reached the half-way mark.

The State government sought to pat itself on the back for the improved results. Vikasana, the capacity-building programme adopted by the Department of Pre-University Education (DPUE), played a crucial role in the improved results, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri claimed. The government now aimed to achieve 70 per cent result within the next three years, he told reporters here on Wednesday.

Coastal Karnataka lived up to its reputation of being the top performing region, with Mangalore and Udupi bagging the first two spots, and Karwar the fourth. Mangalore scored 85.7 per cent (overall result as per the DPUE website), 0.88 per cent less than what it did in 2011. Udupi, the topper in 2011, managed 85.32 per cent, 1.82 per cent less than it did last year. Kodagu grabbed the third spot with 73.11 per cent. Karwar scored 71.31 per cent.

Rural students shine

Students from rural areas have beaten their peers from towns and cities. A good 71.27 per cent of regular students from villages have passed, whereas their peers from urban areas could manage only 69.07 per cent.

The Hyderabad-Karnataka region, dismal in SSLC, could not do better in II PU exams either. Yadgir is the laggard with 32.21 per cent, followed by Gulbarga (38.25). Bijapur is the third worst performer, with 38.73 per cent. Bidar (40.32) Raichur (41.23), and Koppal (42.99) are the other bottom-ranked districts, occupying the 28th, 27th, and 26th spots, respectively.

The Bangalore region, comprising South, North, and Rural educational districts, also could not come up with a better performance in II PU exams. The fortunes of Bangalore Rural have declined in II PUC, too, much like they did in the SSLC exam. The district, which stood sixth with 67.45 per cent in 2011, dropped eight places to take the 14th spot.
