Karnataka youths languish in Jeddah jail for telecom fraud

Print MANGALORE: It is a seemingly endless ordeal that has stretched for more than eight years in Jeddah jail in Saudi Arabia for eight youngsters from Dakshina Kannada district for illegally routing telecom calls. This has forced their family members to plead their case with Governments of India and Saudi Arabia to secure their release on humanitarian grounds.
Hussain Ahmed Kudroli, Riyaz Ahmed, residents of the city, Yousuf Mohammed Shafi, Nasir Mohammed from Ullal, Mohammed Ashraf, resident of Surathkal, Faiz Ahmed of Bajpe, Mohammed Ayub from Kannur and Mohammed Sharif, a resident of BC Road were jailed based on a complaint from Saudi Telecom Company for passing and routing telecom calls illegally in Saudi Arabia eight years ago. Even though they have been imprisoned since eight years, Saudi government has not released them as they have not been able to muster Rs 9.15 crore, which the telecom company demanded.
Now the family members of eight accused have joined hands to plead with the governments and also to pool money to help these youngsters in jail and bring them back to their homes.
Mohammed Javed, brother of Mohammed Ashraf said those who are in jail and their family members are not in a position to pay the huge amount, which the telecom company of Saudi Arabia demanded. "None of the family members of those innocent youngsters are rich enough to pay the amount. Hence, we plead the government of India as well as Saudi Arabia to take initiatives to release them on humanitarian grounds as they have already undergone eight yeas of imprisonment," Javed said.
The family members have decided to stage indefinite hunger strike if their kin in jail are not released. "We are planning to hold hunger protest to press the government for their release. At the same time, we will also launch campaigns to seek help from donors and institutions to pool money for their release," he added.
