Zed to bless Buddhist event in Nevada

Print In a remarkable interfaith gesture, Hindu statesman Rajan Zed will open “An Evening of Chanting from Buddhist Traditions” in Reno (Nevada, USA) with a Hindu blessing on July 27.
This “Artown” event, presented by Reno Buddhist Center (RBC), is formed of chants from different Buddhist traditions from around the world reflecting the cultures from which they have arisen, including Zen and Jodo Shin from Japan and China, Tibetan, Indian and even the USA. About 20 chanters, dressed colorfully, using drums and bells, will participate and shall be enhanced by visual artistry. Carole Maupin is Director of this event which includes "Nembutsu Singers" and well known artists like Dr. Martina Young and Jim Eaglesmith. RBC priest Reverend Jikai’ Phil Bryan will play the unique Zen instrument known as a "Wooden Fish" or Japanese "Mokugyo".
Rajan Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, plans to offer the blessing based on Rig-Veda, the oldest scripture of the world still in common use, starting and ending with “Om”, the mystical syllable containing the universe, which in Hinduism is used to introduce and conclude religious work.
Awards recipient “Artown” “brings the arts to life in Reno each July” with a packed calendar of events, including many distinguished artists from around the world. Dave Aiazzi is the Board Chair while Beth Macmillan is Executive Director of Artown, which was attended by over 300,000 last year.
RBC, whose history goes back to 1989, is affiliated with the Jodo Shinshu Buddhism through Higashi Honganji Tokyo, and exists “to advance the Buddhist Dharma…and contribute to the needs of society…”.
