Most of fines due to speeding

Dubai: A woman in Dubai has got a record number of 257 traffic fines amounting to Dh201,140 within three months.

According to police, the Bangladeshi woman got most of the fines due to speeding.

Traffic statistics revealed on Sunday by the General Directorate of Traffic at Dubai Police for the second quarter of 2012, showed that a Syrian woman was ranked second with 288 various traffic fines totalling Dh186,900, while an Egyptian motorist came in third with Dh169,420 in fines and an Indian motorist came in fourth place with Dh137,400. An Iraqi man ranked fifth on the list had fines totalling Dh135,100.

Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of General Traffic Department of Dubai Police, pointed out that the department will show leniency with offending motorists as long as they cooperate with police.

He stressed that motorists recorded for their large number of traffic violations have received black points accordingly and although he was unable to pinpoint whose vehicle were confiscated, he said that they were allowed to pay the fines in instalments,

“People who try to escape the law and not pay their dues will be penalised accordingly. We have a traffic investigation team that operate undercover and who usually confiscate the vehicle three months before its registration expires if they did not pay off the fines, so as to limit the inconvenience for motorists,” explained Maj Gen Al Zafein, who added that motorists whose violations exceed Dh10,000 are directly contacted by police through a text message and a phone call.

“The follow-up section at the traffic violations department has prepared a list with all the traffic violations made from April to June 2012. The classification of drivers was based on the value of fines owed and not the number of traffic violations committed,” said Colonel Saif Al Mazroui, acting director of Dubai Police’s Traffic Department.

“Women in the list represented 29 per cent of traffic violators with fines worth Dh761,520, leaving men with fines valued at Dh2.9 million,” said Col Mazroui, who pointed out that five Emiratis had a combined fine worth half a million dirhams.
