Travellers suffer as Hosmata bridge submerges for five hours
Heavy rains lashed across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Sunday. The low-lying areas in Mangalore city was inundated. The rain had thrown normal life out of gear.
In the last 24 hours, Mangalore taluk has received highest of 138.7 mm rainfall followed by Moodbidri—122.6 mm, Bantwal—78.39 mm, Sullia—68.4 mm, Puttur—56.22 mm, Belthangady—55.4 mm and Kadaba—55 mm.
Speaking to Deccan Herald, MCC Standing Committee on Health President Bhaskarchandra Shetty said that water had entered into atleast 15 houses in Jeppinamogaru. The Home Guards were pressed to service with the boat facility, to shift the residents of two houses in the region.
In Eekkur, heavy rains resulted in a flood-like situation in lower-lying areas. Water had also entered houses in Kottara, Pandeshwar. A compound wall was damaged in Padavu.
As many as 25 houses have been flooded in Chintana, 20 houses in Kudpadi, 25 houses in Hoige Rashi. In Ekkur, water had entered 30 to 40 houses. Few residents have been shifted to the safer areas.
Mayor Gulzar Banu visited the flood affected Jeppinamogaru. A well caved at Ponnotu in Vitlakasala village. The well belongs to Adam. The residents were using the water from the well for day-today activities.
The rain water had entered Bappanadu temple premises in Mulki on Sunday. In fact, few devotees had even offered special prayers at the temple to reduce the flood situation.
The proposed marshy field race organised by the Mulki Bantara Sangha has been postponed to next Sunday. Artificial flood was created at Aikala, Elinje, Damas Katte areas in Mulki.
Rain water had entered several agriculture fields in Neerkere of Moodbidri. Water had entered the houses of Paledadi Narayana Shettigar and Bhadra Shettigar in Belma. MLA U T Khader visited the spot.
With the overflowing Gundya river, Hosmata bridge was inundated for five hours from 12 noon to 5 pm. The movement of vehicles were disrupted on Uppinangady-Kadaba route. The water-level in river Nethravathi and Kumaradhara was 22 metre in Uppinangady.
Udupi
Torrential rainfall continued to lash Udupi district. The district has received an average of 119.26 mm rainfall in the last 24hours.
Udupi taluk received 152.6 mm, Kundapur—107.7 mm and Karkala—97.6 mm. A school in Mooduthonse village was partially damaged when a tree fell on it owing to heavy rain coupled with gusty wind. As many as five houses each in Nandikuru, Palimaru has been inundated.
In Nandikuru, the houses of Sumathi Shedthi, Kalyani Moilthi, Sheela Shedthi has been flooded. In Majoor village, flood water had entered the premises of Durgaparameshwari temple. The low lying areas have been inundated with artificial floods.
In Karkala, the areas in and around Inna village is flooded. As many as six houses have been partially damaged in Inna village.
