Two Namma Metro workers who tried to make some quick money by breaking into an ATM, were arrested early Sunday morning at Jayanagar.

Ramesh and Lokesh, residents of Ganapati Nagara in Jaraganahalli, work as daily wage workers at a Namma Metro construction site.

They had suffered heavy losses while gambling on cricket, and had accumulated debts amounting to Rs four lakh and hatched a plan to rob a State Bank of Mysore ATM at Jayanagar 6th Block, and clear their debts. After doing a recce of the place, the men came to know that the ATM does not have a security guard and decided to strike on Saturday night.

They wore helmets in an attempt to conceal their identities from the CCTV cameras installed at the ATM counter, and carried a gas-cutting machine to break open the machine. They also carried some  chilli powder and other weapons with them.

As the two set out to break open the machine using gas-cutters, the noise woke up a man from his sleep in a nearby house. He saw the two in action from the window of his house and called up the police control room.

The police immediately alerted two officers who were on night patrol. They rushed to the ATM and caught Ramesh and Lokesh red-handed.

Woman hangs self

A former president of the Bangalore Urban Zilla Panchayat president was found dead hanging from a ceiling fan at her house in HSR Layout, early Sunday morning. The woman has been identified as Ratna Gopal Reddy, 50, of Anekal.

A KPCC member, Reddy had been elected as Bangalore Urban Zilla Panchayat president in the late ‘90s.

Retired from politics recently, she had taken to spirituality.  She was living with her son and family. As no death note was found, the reason for her suicide is unclear. HSR Layout Police have registered a case and are investigating.

IAC activists detained

Activists of  ‘India Against Corruption’ held a protest in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue on MG Road on Sunday evening against the coal scam. The protest was to coincide with other protests held in the national capital on Sunday morning. As the activists had not sought permission from the City police to hold demonstrations, 47 people were taken into preventive custody. They were released later in the evening.

Man dies in accident

Nagaraj, 36, was killed on the spot after a BMTC bus knocked him down near Bank Colony bus stop on 80 feet road in Hanumanthnagar on Saturday night.

The accident occurred when Nagaraj and Bhaskar were crossing the road. The driver of the bus lost control when he suddenly noticed the pedestrians and the vehicle knocked them down. Bhaskar managed to escape, while Nagaraj came under the wheels, the police said.
