Cops throw man out of train over hafta
Four policemen arrested and charged with extortion and attempted murder; victim Habibullah Khan loses right leg
Four constables attached to the crime branch of the Railway Police have been arrested after a shocking incident in which they threw a man off a moving train. The victim, 40-year-old Habibullah Khan, lost his right leg in the incident and is currently recuperating at Sion Hospital.
The four cops — RR Jedhe, VP Thakur, S S Patil and S M Manganor -- have been booked under Section 384 (extortion), Section 385 (extortion by threat to a person) and Section 307 (attempt to murder).
Khan owns a mobile shop and a mutton shop at Antop Hill, and allegedly runs a gambling den on the side. The four cops allegedly picked him up from Antop Hill at around 11 in the morning and tried to extort money from him. They were taking him on a train, towards Tilak Nagar, with Khan refusing to pay up all along.
According to police sources who are investigating the incident, Khan’s refusal to stump up the cash, led to a heated argument, which turned into a scuffle that ended with the cops throwing Khan off the running train. This happened around an hour after he was picked up. Khan survived the fall but a train on the adjacent track ran over his legs and he fell unconscious. The cops, thinking Khan had died, did not report the matter.
Fortunately, passers-by spotted him lying on the tracks and rushed him to Sion Hospital, where his right leg had to be amputated. He had also suffered serious injuries to his left leg.
“My husband called me when he was picked up by the cops and told me that he had already paid them Rs 10,000 but they were demanding another Rs 2 lakh," Khan’s wife Nuri said. "He told me not to worry. But at 8 pm, I got a call from Sion Hospital, saying my husband had been admitted there.”
Khan remained unconscious for a week, and came to on Saturday. He immediately narrated the entire incident to his family, who in turn alerted the cops.
On Sunday, police launched the investigation, and registered cases against Jedhe, Thakur, Patil and Manganor. "We have arrested four constables attached to local crime branch of GRP on charges of extortion and attempt to murder," Senior Inspector Jitendra Rathod of Wadala Railway Police told Mirror. The four will be produced in court on Monday.
