721 polling booths in Udupi
With curtains down on all sorts of campaigning in the district for the Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat polls, elaborate security arrangements have been made by district administration for smooth conduct of polls.
Addressing mediapersons here on Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner Hemalatha said two EVMs will be used in each polling station. There are as many as 721 polling stations in the district. About 1,880 control units have been set up besides 1,730 ballot units. About five polling officials including one Group D worker will accompany the presiding officer in each polling station. As many as 793 presiding officers, 3,172 polling officials and 793 Group D workers have been deployed in the district for the polls, she added.
Candidates
There are 6,71,712 voters in the district. As many as 74 candidates are in fray for the 25 ZP seats in the district.
In Udupi taluk, about 33 candidates are contesting for 11 seats. In Kundapur taluk, 28 candidates are in fray for 9 seats and in Karkala taluk about 13 contestants are in fray for 5 seats. There are 95 TP seats in the district and as many as 238 candidates are in fray. In Udupi taluk, 105 candidates are in fray for 41 seats. In Kundapur taluk, 92 candidates are contesting for 35 seats and in Karkala, there are 40 candidates for 19 seats, she added.
Dry days
Dry days will be in force from Thursday 7 am to December 31, 9 pm. About 20 teams have been constituted to check the cases reported against violation of code of conduct.
Mustering
In Udupi, Saint Cecily’s High School, Brahmagiri, will be mustering, demustering and counting centre. In Kundapur, Bandarkar’s Arts and Science College will be mustering, de-mustering and counting centre. In Karkala, Mini Vidhana Soudha will be mustering centre, Sri Manjunatha Memorial First Grade College will be de-mustering and counting centre. Holidays have been declared for schools and colleges in rural areas across the district. About 58 counting tables will be put for ZP polls and about 95 counting tables for TP polls.
Naxal infested areas
Superintendent of Police Pravin Pawar said that there are 47 polling booths in naxal infested areas. DAR and KSRP platoons are deployed in the areas besides continuous combing operations. As many as 95 mobile patrolling vehicles are put on duty in the district. Two teams of special police have arrived from Tamil Nadu. As many as 3 DySPs, 14 inspectors, 33 SIs, 52 ASIs, 188 HCs, 624 Constables, 175 Armed Constables and 500 Home Guards will be deployed for the election purpose, he added. As many as 206 cases have been booked till date under preventive section and against anti-social elements, he added.
