Ullal show to create awareness on cleanliness; honour crusaders Salumarada Thimmakka and Hajabba

The Ullal beach in this coastal city is all set to witness its first two-day beach fest on November 24 and 25. Like the Panambur beach, the Ullal beach too, hopes to get a facelift after the event. Deputy Commissioner NS Channappa Gowda on Saturday released the brochure of the beach festival.

The event, being organised on the lines of Panambur beach festival, will include dance festival, star evening, beach games, food festival, kite show and sand art.
 
The star evening will feature a performance by singer Vijayprakash, who also sang in the Oscar-award winning film Slumdog Millionaire, and his troupe. The internationally acknowledged group of hobby kite flyers Team Mangalore will display their collection of kites at the kite show.
 
Organisers will also honour Salumarada Thimmakka and Harekala Hajabba who have contributed to ecology and education on this occasion.
 
Speaking to Bangalore Mirror , CEO of Panambur Beach Tourism Project Yathish Baikampady said, “Beach fests are an attempt to develop the beaches. We want to involve the local youth and give Mangalore the best beaches for attracting more tourists.”
 
Yathish is hopeful that that once the spot is identified, the tourism department will undertake works. "Like Kambalas or buffalo races held annually in and around the coastal belt, beach festivals should also be held annually with the involvement of local youth. Generally, local organisations take up beach cleaning activities once in a year. Beach fests create awareness among the public about the need to keep the beaches clean and the government is forced to take up development works like installation of lights, building toilets and so on," he said.
 
Maruthi Yuvaka Mandala, a local youth organisation which is celebrating its silver jubilee, will organise the beach fest. On the occasion, they also plan to inaugurate the new building of the government school, constructed at the cost of Rs 1 crore.
 
Light and sound show
Similar fests were earlier organised at the Surathkal, Padubidri and Chithrapur beaches. Meanwhile, there are also plans to organise a light and sound show based on the life of Rani Abakka at the Someshwar beach, later during the year.
