Seer Sri Balagangadharanatha to participate in dharna today

 
Federation of Kannada organisations has called for Karnataka bandh on October 6 to protest against the Cauvery River Authority’s (CRA) direction to the state to release water to Tamil Nadu.

Seer Sri Balagangadharanatha Swamiji of Adichunchanagiri mutt will take part in the ongoing dharna being staged under the aegis of Jilla Raitha Hitharakshana Samithi near the statue of Sir M Visveswaraya here on Sunday to extend his support to the protestors.

Vice-president of State unit of JD(S) Ashok Jayaram will undertake a padayatra up to the Raj Bhavan in Bangalore on September 24.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, president of Dr Rajkumar Abhimanigala Sangha Sa Ra Govind said the bandh will be observed with the support of all Kannada organisations to send a strong message to the authorities concerned that it is not possible to abide by the CRA’s diktat.

He said the four Union ministers and all MPs from the state should resign and participate in the protest demonstrations to safeguard the interest of the farmers in the Cauvery basin.

Office-bearers of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce extended their support to the ongoing protests by participating in the dharana.

Ashok, who was addressing the media, said the padayatra would be launched at 10 am on September 24 from the Sir M Visveswaraya statue here to bring in awareness about the Cauvery river water dispute along the route to Bangalore.

He said after submitting a memorandum to the Governor, a public meeting would be held at Freedom Park or near Mahatma Gandhi Statue in Bangalore to draw the attention of the government about the seriousness of the problem.

Disclosing that the seer of Adichunchanagiri mutt was taking part in the dharana, seer Sri Nanjavadootha Swamiji of Spatikapuri mutt in Sira said all spiritual leaders should extend their support for the state’s cause by attending the dharna at least once.

Ex-MLA L R Shivaramegowda said all chief ministers have deceived the farmers in the Cauvery basin over the years.

“All chief ministers have let down the people by letting water to Tamil Nadu. State water resources minister Basavarja Bommai has been a disaster.

He has not done anything for the Cauvery basin. Even the funds released for the works here has been meagre. Except for offering the ‘bhagina’ at KRS he has done nothing,” he alleged.
