LONDON: A Conservative MP in Britain has sought reopening of investigation into alleged financial irregularities by Indian-origin Labour MP Keith Vaz, who was probed over his financial matters in 2000 and 2001.

Andrew Bridgen is seeking another probe by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards after The Daily Telegraph today reported that the earlier police investigation had discovered that funds in bank accounts linked to Vaz were "of a suspicious nature".

Vaz, who is currently the chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee, denied any wrongdoing and said the report referred to two parliamentary inquiries that began in 1999 and concluded in 2003.

The paper reported: "Detectives found that over a six-year period, almost 500,000 pounds was apparently deposited in the MP’s accounts -- in addition to his salary between 1997 and 2001".

The report said: "The source of the funds has not been declared publicly and the evidence gathered by police may contradict assurances given by Mr Vaz during an investigation into his finances between 2000 and 2001 carried out by parliament".

Vaz, in a statement to the newspaper, said: "These matters relate to two parliamentary inquiries which began in 1999 and concluded in 2003. My finances were discussed by every newspaper in the country for a period of three years and were the subject of extensive examination".

He added: "All ministers have to report all their financial interests to their permanent secretary, which I did. I had no discussions with the then cabinet secretary or the then prime minister about any of these issues.I know of no investigation."

The daily quotes "an internal briefing document circulated within Scotland Yard", as saying that "the level of funds received... are of a suspicious nature".

The Metropolitan Police said: "It would not be appropriate for the Metropolitan Police Service to comment on any individual historic financial investigations that may or may not have been conducted."
