A 24-year-old woman was killed in a freak accident when a BMTC bus rammed an electricity pole and it fell on her, near Prasanna Circle on Magadi Road on Tuesday.

According to police, the driver of the city bus (KA-01/FA-318) lost control over the vehicle as its brakes failed. In his attempt to bring the vehicle to a halt, the driver rammed the bus into a roadside electricity pole.

As a result, the pole was knocked down, and it, in turn, brought down another electricity pole over Preethi, who was on her way to a shop. The BMTC bus was hired to pick up and drop employees of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.

Preethi, a resident of Rajajinagar VI Block, was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital with severe head injuries, where she was declared brought dead.

She worked with a private company and her father, Vasanth Kumar, is a retired government employee. The autopsy was performed at Victoria Hospital and the body handed over to the family in the evening.

The driver of the bus was arrested and later released on bail. Magadi Road traffic police have registered a case.

Head-on collision

In another accident, a sales executive with a beverages company was killed when a KSRTC bus rammed the bike he was riding, in front of Ulsoor Gate police station, Monday night.

The deceased has been identified as Suresh, 23, a native of Pandavapura in Mandya district.

Police said the accident occurred when Suresh was returning to his room from work along with his colleague, Umesh. Both Suresh and Umesh sustained severe head injuries and were rushed to a nearby private hospital.

Suresh was declared brought dead, while Umesh has been shifted to Nimhans and is stated to be critical.  The driver of the bus has been arrested and the Ulsoor Gate traffic police have registered a case.

In another accident, an unidentified person was mowed down in a hit-and-run accident on Infantry Road, Monday night. Police said the deceased is a man aged about 50 years.

The footage of the CCTV cameras installed on Infantry Road are being verified to track the vehicle, police sources said.
