Rocket attacks on Peshawar airport in Pakistan; five killed, several injured
Peshawar: Five people have been killed and 30 others injured in rocket attacks at the Peshawar airport and its surrounding areas in Pakistan.
According to reports, five rockets hit the Bacha Khan International Airport, University Town and another residential neighbourhood at around 9 pm today. They were fired from an unknown location. Officials were quoted by TV news channels as saying that the rockets were fired from the tribal areas adjoining Peshawar, the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.
Meanwhile, the injured, four of them critical, have been shifted to hospitals.
Children, women and senior citizens are among the injured - all of them are civilians. They were injured by shrapnel from the rockets and bullets, said Umar Ayub, a senior official of Khyber Teaching Hospital.
An emergency has been declared at the airport which was sealed following the strikes. Pakistan Army has moved in to secure the location of the attack. Troops are conducting a search operation to ascertain if any militants have entered the airport.
TV channels reported that troops were exchanging fire with suspected militants almost 40 minutes after the rockets were fired at the airport.
No group has claimed responsibility for the incident so far.
