Funeral service of Indians who died in Muscat held in Mangalore

Print MANGALORE: The funeral service of two Mangaloreans who were found dead in their room in an under-construction building in Yimti, about 125km from Oman’s capital Muscat, on December 23, was held at their respective parish churches here on Wednesday. Lancelot D’Souza, 40, and his nephew Sharon D’Souza, 26, died reportedly due to asphyxiation after inhaling poisonous gas emitted from objects they had burnt to keep their room warm, an Oman daily reported.
While the funeral mass of Lawrence D’Souza was held at Cascia Church at Marnamikatte, that of Sharon was held at Queens Mary Church, Kutthar, Ranipura near here. One of their roommates, Deepak, 24, from Uttar Pradesh too was left critically ill following the incident. Sharon, his brother Sachith, Lancelot and Deepak, all roommates, were doing interior decoration work for a small company. Sachith was taken into police custody as part of the investigation.
The death of Lancelot, the breadwinner came as a rude shock to the family that was preparing for Christmas. Lancelot had called Rufeena Gracy D’Souza, his wife on December 22 to enquire about preparations for the festival. And the call of his death came around 11am on December 24. Crib, stars and lights were ready in front of the house of Lancelot at Kamala Compound near Jeppu Bappal in the city to welcome him. But fate had willed otherwise for the family.
Lancelot is survived by Rufeena and daughters Samantha Angel D’Souza, 14 and Shalomi D’Souza, 12. Samantha is a class IX student at St Agnes School, and Shalomi a class VII student at St Rita School. In fact, it was Sachith who called Rufeena on December 24 to inform the family back home about the tragic event. "Initially, we had sketchy details about their death. Later, we learnt about the cause of death, a grieving Rufeena had told TOI, a day after Christmas.
