Crimes against women seem to be continuing unabated, with locals in Virar stumbling last morning upon the injured body of a woman discarded in the bushes by the side of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway.
Yet to be identified, the woman was found wearing nothing except plastic bangles. She appeared to be in her mid-twenties, police said.
According to the Virar police officers, they received a call around 8.30 am on Thursday from the locals living near Virar Phata, informing them of a woman’s body found lying in the bushes near the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway going northward.
“We were on our way to work when we saw a crowd gathered near Virar Phata. We went there and saw a woman’s naked body covered in dirt,” said Vimal Jadhav, a local who then called the police, informing them of the body.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Deepak Devraj said that they sent a team of police officers to the spot where the body was discovered. On examining the body, the police found wound marks on her neck, face and head. By afternoon, the officers sent the body to JJ hospital for a post-mortem, to find out the time of her death and whether she had been raped.
Officers said the woman seemed to be from a middle-class family.
“We have registered a case of murder against unknown persons and are making attempts to identify the deceased,” said a police officer.
The police have spoken to the locals and recorded their statements.
“We are trying to establish the identity of the woman who seems to be a local. Based on observation, we assume that the woman was not raped. But we are awaiting her postmortem report from JJ hospital,” said DSP Devraj.
