‘Konkani losing identity’

Konkani language which is the mother tongue of 41 communities is losing its identity due to the influence of other languages, hence ‘Ghar Ghar Konkani’ programme is organised to protect the identity of Konkani language and culture, said Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy President Kasargod Chinna.
He was speaking after inaugurating ‘Ghar Ghar Konkani’ programme jointly organised by Rajapura Saraswatha Yuva Vrinda and Konkani Academy at the residence of Bantakallu B C Road K R Patkar on Sunday.
He said that the government has been giving good amount of fund for the Academy, thus helping it to preserve and promote Konkani language, literature, folklore and values.
‘Ghar Ghar Konkani’ programme has been organised to introduce Konkani language, literature and folk culture to the rural population. It is an innovative initiative towards promoting Konkani language, he said.
“Appreciating the Catholic community for its contribution towards the development of Konkani language and literature, he said, of the 1800 Konkani literature books in Academy, 1600 books are authored by Christians community members.
The language and literature will cherish only when all the Konkani speaking communities come forward and actively contribute towards Konkani literature on the lines of Christians,” Chinna said.
Academy’s Member B Pundalik Marathe said that there are many litterateurs in Rajapura Saraswatha community, but most of their works are in Kannada. Steps will be taken to translate them into Konkani in the days to come, he said.
Udupi Zilla Panchayat President and Rajapura Saraswatha Brahmin Sangha Bantakallu President Upendra Nayak conveyed his wishes to all the future endeavours of the Academy.
