Bid to vandalise Nandi idol in Mysore; mentally ill man arrested
A youth has been arrested for trying to vandalise the monolithic idol of Nandi (sacred bull) at Chamundi Hills on Wednesday night.
The accused, Nagaraja Nayak, 22, of Basavapura, Gajanur Road in Chamarajanagar taluk, told the police he watched a late-night movie show in a city theatre and then climbed the hills around 11 pm. He then went to the idol through the stairs. He tried to climb the idol but slipped.
He tried again by clutching the rudrakshamala around the idol’s neck but it snapped. He smeared on his body sacred ash kept beneath the monolith and performed puja. He also set on fire make-shift shops on carts nearby.
When the vandalism came to light on Thursday, it incensed devotees, who initially thought it to be the act of miscreants. However, it didn’t take much time for the KR police to find Nayak, who was wandering near the Mahishasura statue, holding a torn piece of saffron cloth, which had been draped around the idol.
Nagaraja Nayak has been booked under Sections 426 (destroying property), 427 (setting fire) and 435 (causing damage) of the Indian Penal Code. He was subjected to medical checkup before being produced before a magistrate.
