 NITTE Education Institution in association with Life is Calling Sports and Dakshina Kannada Athletic Association, will be organising the second edition of Nitte celebration Mangalore half-marathon and 10K, at Mangala stadium in Mangalore, on February 24.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, P V Mithra of Life is Calling said that the event has both competitive and non-competitive running categories.

The 21 kms half-marathon and 10kms run are in the competitive category. In addition, a 3-km run will be the competitive category for high school boys and girls. A 5-km run for college boys and girls with 5-km celebration run or walk will be in the non-competitive category.

Runners from Dakshina Kannada have special category. Senior athletes also have good opportunity this time under senior category (46 years to 60 years) and veteran category (61 years and above), he said.

Impressive response

Mithra said that many international athletes including few Ethiopian and Kenyans have showed interest to participate in the race.

“The total number of international athletes would be around 20. Response is very good from across the country. Athletes from Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Kolkata, Mumbai and many other countries will also take part in the event. About 550 runners are expected to take part in half marathon and 10 km race. Around 5,000 to 10,000 people are expected to take part in 5 km and 10 km races,” he said.

Prizes

Stating that prizes worth Rs 4,62,000 will be given to winners, he said that the winners of half-marathon and 10-km runners would receive medals too.

All the participants in 5km/3km run and 5km celebration run/walk will receive event cap while, all the finishers in 5kms/3kms celebration run will receive certificates, he said.

Meanwhile, Nitte University Registrar Dr Rajshekhar unveiled the logo of the event. The posters of the marathon, with a logo- ‘The marathon can humble you’ were also released at the occasion. Corporation Bank Deputy General Manager John D’Souza, Ambassadors for the marathon Olympian Vandana Shanubagh and athlete Anand Shetty were also present.
