The project is taken up in Hebri and Nitte villages of Karkala taluk

The multi village drinking water scheme seems to be the best possible option in the wake of shortage of water, especially during summer and also against the threat of the depleting ground water table.

The irregular monsoon has very often resulted in either floods or droughts creating uncertainties over the surety of ground water level.

The multi village drinking water project being a long term plan that leads to permanent solution against drinking water problems is opted by many districts in state.

 In Udupi district, the multi village drinking water project is already taken up in two areas. The project is taken up in Hebri and Nitte villages of Karkala taluk.
The work in Hebri and surrounding villages is under progress.

Zilla Panchayat CEO Prabhakar Sharma told Deccan Herald that the contractor who was assigned the contract in Nitte has not reached the expectation level in terms of progress in work.

Hence, the work is stopped and re-tender process in underway. However, the work in Hebri is under progress, he added.

Other than these two projects, the district has sent a proposal to the Central government recommending the provision of multi village drinking water schemes in as many as 28 villages in Udupi district. The total project cost is Rs 200.96 crores, he said.

Around eight projects are identified in Udupi taluk and the sum earmarked for the project is Rs 73.5 crores. In Kundapur taluk, as many as Rs 86.9 crores is earmarked for around 10 multi village drinking water schemes. In Karkala, there are around 10 schemes at the cost of Rs 40.56 crores.

“We have requested the Central government to consider salinity percentage in the water bodies in Udupi district as chemically affected problem and to reflect over special consideration similar to that of the regions in North Karnataka. Based on these arguments, we have put forth before central government our demand for around 28 multi village drinking water schemes in the district,” he added.

In North Karnataka, most of the water bodies contain chemicals like arsenic and chloride and it is of no use for drinking water purpose.

The ground water level is contaminated with these chemicals.  Hence, these regions should depend on surface flow like rivers and ponds. The CEO said the Chief Engineers Office in Bangalore has considered the request and the proposal is sent to the central government.

Once the projects are approved, the project scheme report will be prepared and is sent to the State Level Scheme Committee. Once the committee approves the project scheme report, the detailed project is prepared, which is followed by the call for tender process, he added.

In Udupi taluk, the projects cover Manipur (Rs 10 crores), Hejmadi (Rs 8.5 crores), 80-Badagabetttu (Rs 12 crores), Perdur-Perampalli (Rs 5 crores), Tenkaneediyur (Rs 9 crores), Chantharu (Rs 12 crores), Kadur (Rs 12 crores) and Hegunnje (Rs 5 crores).

In Karkala, Shirlalu (Rs 5.1 crores), Belmannu (Rs 4.22 crores), Bola-Kidinje (Rs 3.23 crores), Palli (Rs 4.5 crores), Inna (Rs 3.14 crores), Mundkur (Rs 2.67 crores), Yeralpadi (Rs 6.5 crores), Kadthala (Rs 5.2 crores), Mala (Rs 1.5 crores) and Mudar-Meeyaru (Rs 4.5 crores).

In Kundapur, the projects include Amasebailu (Rs 13.4 crores), Molahalli (Rs 10 crores), Kalavara (Rs 8 crores), Ombadi-Mundadi (Rs 8 crores), Barkur (Rs 15 crores), Alur (Rs 6 crores), Hakladi (Rs 8 crores), Chitur (Rs 9 crores), Vandse (Rs 4 crores) and Kalthodu Paika (Rs 5.5 crores).
