Starting R-Day, ragi ball will add nutritious value to mid-day meals in schools

As part of Republic Day, members of various organisations took out a 1,100-foot long National Flag on the streets of the town on Saturday.

Otherwise a sleepy town, the procession of the huge flag evoked curiosity among the people in Chintamani, who also joined the procession quite enthusiastically.

At least 3,000 students along with members of Komarla Balaga, Vasavi Yuva Jana Sangha and Lions Club participated in the procession. The massive flag was readied  by D C Lakshmi Narayana Gupta of Roddam in Andhra Pradesh.

Going a long way

The procession began from Double Road to PCR Complex and returned to Bangalore Circle to reach Jhansi Rani stadium where they saluted the flag.

People had gathered in large numbers throughout the stretch to watch the procession. Traffic was completely halted in double road.

Ragi ball will now be added to the mid-day meals menu and it will be served once in a week to the students of first standard to 10 standard. The new menu was adopted by the schools in the district on the occasion of Republic Day.

Following a direction by the Ministry of Human Resources Development’s direction, the nutritious food will be served once in a week to the students, on an experimental basis. The new menu (added with ragi ball) will be in place from January to April (only eleven days) and at least 216.21 metric tonnes of ragi will be used for the purpose and Rs 60.54 lakh will be spent on this.

The required amount will be reimbursed from the grants provided under the Mid-day meal project, Jayakumar, Joint Director, Bangalore Division Akshara Dasoha project, on a 75:25 ratio between the Central government and State government told Deccan Herald. The new menu will be in a total of 2,060 government and aided schools in the district.

Minister R Varthur Prakash launched the project at Government High School in Prakash Nagar, on Saturday.
