New evaluation system for first PU students put on hold
The Department of Pre-University Education has decided to hold back the Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system for this academic year.
The department, which had announced the CCE system for first PU students last year, has now decided to not take it into account for the first PU annual examinations to be held in February.
The CCE meant that the first PU students would be promoted to the second year not on the basis of one annual examination score, but by taking into account their performance throughout the year. Each of their tests and assignment scores would have added up to the final score in the annual examination. This system was put in place by former commissioner of DPUE, Rashmi V, beginning from the academic year 2012-13. Now, the department has decided to hold it back for the current year, as it has found it unviable.
Speaking to Deccan Herald, a senior official in the department, said, “We have been getting complaints from lecturers in several colleges that the new system of evaluation has been tedious and cumbersome.”
As per this system of evaluation, colleges had to take into account the score of a student in each test. Every test had to be conducted for 25 marks and 10 per cent of the score of each test will be added to the annual examination.
The scores of four such tests (amounting to 40 per cent for the annual examination) had to be added to the final examination.
Apart from this, the mid-term examination score would contribute to another 20 per cent, and the annual examination itself would amount to 30 per cent. The other 10 marks were for attendance.
Colleges which followed this pattern this year will now take into account just the annual examination marks, with the department withholding the system for this year.
‘No lecturers’
Officials at the department said not every college followed the “difficult” system. “Many said the scoring was confusing and they were not able to do it,” said a senior official at the DPUE. The other reason, according to the official, was not every college had the infrastructure to implement the system. “Many colleges do not have the facility to store the answer scripts.”
The department officials added that the lack of sufficient lecturers in colleges was another reason to scrap the system for the time being. The DPUE is recruiting lecturers to fill 1,764 vacancies. As of now, there are 9,839 lecturers. Frequent and elaborate evaluation throughout the year has not been possible in colleges where there was shortage of staff, officials said.
The department will implement the system next year. Training has been planned for lecturers to implement CCE effectively. Officials believe that the current recruitment process will lighten their burden.
