New taluk residents rejoice govt move; Hebri bundh today in protest

The creation of four taluks, namely, Kadaba and Moodbidri in Dakshina Kannada and Brahmavar and Baindur in Udupi district has brought smiles on the faces of those who have been fighting for the same.

In Kadaba, people celebrated the decision of the government by holding Vijayotsava.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Kadaba Taluk Rachana Horata Samiti President C C Philip said that the public and the samithi members organised a vijayotsava and procession, to express happiness over the announcement of the new taluk.

The five-decade-old demand of getting taluk status has been realised. The demand was first raised way back in 1961.

The B M Hundekar taluk reorganisation committee, in its recommendations made in 1985, had suggested that Kadaba be made a taluk. Later, Gaddigowdar Committee too had recommended the same. The government had appointed a special tahsildar for Kadaba in 2005.

However, later taluk reconstitution committee under the presidentship of M B Prakash did not include Kadaba in its recommendations in 2009.

Moodbidri taluk

The demand of the people of Dakshina Kannada that Moodbidri be declared a taluk has been fulfilled.

MLA Abhaychandra Jain said that the people of Moodbidri are happy over the taluk status. The demand for Moodbidri taluk was raised in 1964 by the then MLA Dharma Samrajya. Over the years, the demand was not fulfilled and now it has seen the light of the day.

Former minister Amarnath Shetty has congratulated Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar for giving taluk status to Moodbidri. He said appointment of an additional tahsildar a few years ago had rekindled the hopes of the people.

Even before Udupi District was carved out of Dakshina Kannada in 1997, the Gaddi Gowder Committee appointed to consider the reorganisation of the districts had recommended that Mulki-Moodbidri-Venoor areas could form a taluk. Gowder had pointed out that the bifurcation of Dakshina Kannada District would have no meaning if new taluks were not created. The Hundekar Committee also had made a similar recommendation.

The recommendations of the committees have now been realised with the taluk status.

Brahmavar / Baindoor

Brahmavar Taluk Horata Samiti President Satish Barkur said that the day will  remain cherished in the history of Brahmavar. The long struggle has yielded a good result. The taluk status for Brahmavar will certainly aid the all-round development.

MLA Raghupathy Bhat said that the formation of taluks will help in the development ofthe region.

Baindoor MLA Laxminarayan said that the government and CM should be thanked for fulfilling the long cherished dreams. No previous governments had taken up the initiative.
 He said it was already announced in the party meeting, however it is made legal by announcing it in the budget. The people in Baindoor will have many facilities and the taluk status will help Baindoor to develop.

“We will get mini Vidhana Soudha. All these days Baindoor was getting meagre amount for development work,” he said.

Disappoints Hebri

The people of Hebri who were hoping for taluk status have been disappointed. M B Prakash committee had recommended for the formation of Hebri taluk. Hebri Taluk Horata Samithi convener Neere Krishna Shetty has called for Hebri bandh on Saturday, in protest against the decision of the government.
