Local body poll results in Karnataka crucial ahead of assembly polls: KJP leader

Print MANGALORE: Results of urban local body elections will be a clear political gauge on the voters mood ahead of impending elections to state assembly given that 88 lakh-odd voters, around 40% of the total state electorate is likely to vote in the ULB polls, said Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) leader V Dhananjaya Kumar. The ULB polls will be the perfect launch pad for the nascent party founded by former CM BS Yeddyurappa, he opined.
Interacting with reporters after a meeting with local party office bearers and workers, Kumar hailed move by state election commission to hold polls to 208 ULBs in the state, including six city corporations. KJP will strive to contest in all the wards in these ULBs, he said, adding that party leadership headed by Yeddyurappa has started the process of confabulations on selecting the candidates and even started touring the district in the run up to the polls.
Exuding confidence that the KJP will make a mark in the ULB polls, Kumar said, "It is our expectation to win in at least 40% of the wards that we contest across Karnataka." In DK district for which he has been vested with responsibility of organising the party for the polls, he said, KJP will field candidates in all wards in Belthangady, Sullia, while discussions are on about number of seats to be contested in Moodbidri, Puttur, Mangalore and Ullal.
On the seeming stalemate with regard to BJP MLAs resigning and joining the KJP, Kumar said, "We are not worried about that now." The party will not insist on MLAs quitting the saffron outfit and joining the KJP. However, KJP reserves the right to decide which of these MLAs it should admit to party. The KJP is keen to make use of the political experience of leaders of other parties, who are looking forward to join this regional outfit, he said.
