Pervez Musharraf vows to return to Pakistan today despite Taliban threats

Dubai: Pakistan’s former president Pervez Musharraf will return to his country from self-exile today to lead his party in the general elections in May, and says he is unfazed by the Taliban’s threats to kill him.
"I am going home as announced. I am not scared of anything - be it the death threat from terrorists or arrest on arrival," Mr Musharraf yesterday told supporters of his All-Pakistan Muslim League party, hours after the Pakistan Taliban said they would use suicide bombers and snipers to kill the former military ruler.
Mr Musharraf, who is 69, is scheduled to arrive in Karachi with party supporters. He has been on self-exile for nearly four years.
Mr Musharraf faces three cases in Pakistan, including the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007 when he was president. But the threat of imprisonment on arrival has receded with the Sindh High Court granting him pre-arrival protective bail in all cases.
The All-Pakistan Muslim League has been trying to mobilise support for Mr Musharraf with an advertisement campaign in the media.
In a video released in northwest Pakistan yesterday, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan spokesman Ihsanullah Ihsan had said Mr Musharraf would be the "main target" of militants on return and asked him to surrender to the Taliban.
Adnan Rashid, a militant involved in an earlier attempt to assassinate Mr Musharraf, said the Taliban had formed a squad of suicide bombers to target him.
Earlier this week, Saudi Arabia officials had cautioned Mr Musharraf that he faced "danger" in Pakistan.
Mr Musharraf seized power in Pakistan in a coup in 1999. He stepped down as President in 2008. Threatened with impeachment, he went on self-exile.
