From intelligent disposal of plastic to providing easy mobility to the physically challenged, students of Srinivas Institute of Technology (SIT) proved that they can find solutions to major problems using their creativity and engineering skills.

An expo of over 100 projects designed by the final year and third year engineering students kicked off at the college premises in Valachil on Friday.

Students of Mechanical Engineering practically showed how machines make laborious work easy and faster.

Final year student Kaushik Prasad pointed out to his project ’Design and Fabrication of Multi Bunch Paddy Thresher’ and said that one can separate paddy from eight bundles of paddy within minutes.

Clifford Aranha is one among four students who have designed an ’Automated Prosthetic Leg for Physically Challenged’. "With this leg, a physically handicapped person or paralysed person can walk with ease. One has to fix the machine to his leg and waist. The machine then lifts the entire leg and keeps it forward, making it easy for a person to walk," explained Clifford.

Plastic menace as well as rise in fuel prices can be battled with ’Waste Plastic Disposer’. The students showed that with their machine, they could convert plastic into fuel.
Mohith Kalmady said that arecanut is a major crop of DK district. Hence, with his ’Areca tree climber,’ the farmers can work efficiently. With ’Mini crop cutting machine,’ farmers can cut as well as collect crops, said another student Krishna.

Students of Electrical and Communication Engineering Department showed how life can be made easy with a remote control and how to use the advanced communication system in day-to-day life.

One could turn TV on/off, flick channels and control volume by using hand gestures and voice commands.

With our project ’Day light occupancy for energy saving,’ the lights can be turned on and off as per requirement, as a sensor detects the number of people present in the room and the time of day, said Nikitha.

Physically challenged can operate a computer using eye movements with project ’Eye Mouse’. Students Jefin, Abhishek, Govin and Naveen have designed ’Ultra-Low powered micro-controller based auto podiatric shoe pronation detector,’ basically an intelligent shoe which will help the person wearing it gain control, in case it feels that the person is losing balance.With ’Vehicle authentication and speed control system’ designed by the students, traffic control can be made easy. One can also be aware of hazards well in advance while driving a vehicle through ’Risk warning system’.Students of Computer Science and Engineering branch showed the magic of computers and softwares through their projects.
The students designed innovative applications such as, ’Criminal Face Identification System,’ ’Safe locking using stepper motor,’ ’Computer controlled shop loader/unloader,’ ’Arecanut classification using an embedded system,’ ’PC spy monitor’ and ’Drawing robot,’ among others.
Shopping was made easy with application ’Smart Shopping’ designed by Students of Information Science and Engineering.
The students showed how facial identification can keep ones system secure and how one can easily track a lost cellphone using ’Mobile tracker’.
Speaking to Deccan Herald, College Principal Dr Shrinivasa Mayya D said that the expo is held with an aim to enhance knowledge and enable learning through interaction. "The projects designed by our students get better every year. Around eight projects of the students in our college are sponsored by Karnataka State Science and Technology Department," he said.
The expo was inaugurated by MRPL HR GM Sushilchandra and presided over by SIT President CA Raghavendra Rao. The expo will be open tomorrow too.
