NH-66 widening resumes, bridges to wait

Print UDUPI: Resumption of work on National Highway 66 between Surathkal and Kundapur, a stretch of 90 km, has brought relief to people. But vehicle users will have to put up with some inconvenience because work on most bridges on the stretch is yet to be completed.
Four-laning is being carried out speedily all along stretches barring Padubidri, where the issue of bypass persists.
But work on most bridges on the stretch is yet to begin. Sources in NHAI informed STOI that this is likely to conclude by December, 2014.
The people of Kundapur have a reason to smile.
Their demand for a flyover at Shastri Circle instead of an embankment looks likely to be fulfilled. Shops and complexes have been evacuated and the work on the flyover will begin shortly.
Kenchanoor Somshekar Shetty, convener of the Save Kundapur Action Committee, told STOI that the 150-meter flyover, in five spans, will facilitate easy access to Kundapur town for vehicles coming from Udupi, Byndoor and Bhatkal.
The four-laning project was started during September 2010 with a deadline of March 2013.
The project costs Rs 671 crore, out of which Rs 221.43 crore has been granted by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the remaining amount invested by Navayuga Construction Company.
The project contractor will collect toll from vehicles in Hejamady and Sastana for a period of 20 years.
A financial crisis that had hit Navyuga resulted in a complete halt to work. Interruption in land acquisition and delay in the supply of bitumen from MRPL for the project also contributed to the delay.
