Two Sharjah taxi drivers separately returned a combined Dh60,000 worth of precious jewels along with 
an iPad and passports in the past week.

The Sharjah Transport honoured the two Pakistani cabbies, from the Citi Taxi Company and Emirates Cab for their honest deeds. Sharjah Transport Assistant Director-General Arhama Al Shamsi told Khaleej Times that the first cabbie Iqbal Mazhar discovered a briefcase with jewels worth Dh35,000 in the cab boot a week ago.

“The male passenger was heading from Al Bustan Hotel in Al Qassimiya area to Al Nabaa area in Sharjah,” he said, noting that the honest driver, working with Citi Taxi, handed over the lost property to his company right away.

Al Shamsi said the second driver, Janni Abdulrahman, discovered a box with jewels worth Dh25,000, as well as an iPad and four passports in the backseat a week ago too.

“The female passenger was heading from Central Market to Khalid Lagoon,” he said. The driver, who works for Emirates Cab, immediately handed the box in to his company as well.

“The cabbie, following a call from the woman at the Sharjah Transport Call Centre...returned to the place he dropped her and gave her the box he found untouched.” Commuters are advised to pay attention to the colour of the taxi and driver’s uniform as every company has a distinct colour.

“They should also keep the receipt of the tariff to better identify the taxi and find the items lost in a short time,” he said.

Earlier this year, Sharjah Transport honored two Pakistani cabbies of the Citi Taxi Company for honestly returning Dh112,000 and very important documents passengers left behind.

In May 2012, Sharjah Transport honoured a cabbie of the Etihad Taxi company for returning Dh16,000 and important documents to a passenger he transported from the Abu Shagara area to the Sharjah Industrial Area.

In 2010 and 2011, three cabbies from Sharjah, Emirates and Citi cab firms returned around Dh500,000 as well as other valuables and important documents they found in their cabs.

Honouring the two honest cabbies with a cash prize, valuable gifts and appreciation certificates, Al Shamsi said Sharjah Transport, set to encourage drivers’ good conduct, curb traffic violations and complaints, and boost customer satisfaction, has adopted an incentive scheme worth Dh100,000.

As per the Shukran programme, the drivers of the four franchise companies operating in the city are rewarded financially and spiritually and may also replace any black points imposed against traffic violations with white ones.

“We want to provide the best of the best services to our customers and passengers who hit around 55 million in 2012,” he said, noting that Sharjah Transport has honored 860 drivers since 2010 in three annual forums for their honesty and outstanding performance.
